Our Review Verdict: Is UK DIGIS a Scam or Legitimate?
We found UK DIGIS to be a legitimate programme, and not a scam, fake or fraud. It is operated by PASDO, a respected international non-profit and non-governmental organisation that holds accreditation with several international bodies, among them agencies of the United Nations. PASDO has more than 15 years of verified digital footprints for its programmes, and it is funded by international organisations and philanthropists. Its official website is pasdo.org, where UK DIGIS is published. In our review, the programme is open about what it offers, who qualifies and how the money works. The applicant’s share is stated up front, nothing is ever repaid, and there is no charge to apply.
What Is the UK DIGIS Grant?
UK DIGIS is short for the UK Digital Intervention Grant for Individuals and Small Businesses. In our review, we found that it helps freelancers, start-ups and small businesses across the UK pay for digital support, for example virtual staff, a website or social media management.
It is a part-funded subsidy. If your application succeeds, UK DIGIS pays between 10% and 40% of the cost of the service, and you pay the remainder. No cash changes hands. You receive a grant code instead, to use with an approved UK service provider within a set period.
Cautions to Note about UK DIGIS Programme
Our review of the programme brought up three points that every applicant should understand.
1. Apply as soon as you can, because rounds can end quickly
UK DIGIS opens for applications in rounds, a few times a year, and no closing date is set in advance. Applications are dealt with in the order they arrive, and a round ends when the funds set aside for it run out. The application form is then switched off until the next round begins. Rounds can end very quickly, and some have closed about three to five days after opening because of the rush of applicants. If you qualify and a round is open, act straight away.
2. Know how the grant connects to the UN Sustainable Development Goals
UK DIGIS is not a general giveaway. PASDO funds it mainly to help meet the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and that influences who is chosen. The programme is aimed chiefly at SDG 8, Decent Work and Economic Growth, and also feeds into SDG 9, Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, and SDG 1, No Poverty.
For you as an applicant, this means each request is judged on what the support is for. Your application should show that the service would achieve at least one of these:
- raise productivity in a business, freelance, self-employed or start-up venture that could add to economic development in the UK
- add directly to economic growth in the UK
- help meet one or more of the SDGs
Pick the one that fits best and say why. You don’t have to satisfy all three. A clear, honest explanation of how the support will help your work grow, or help meet a goal, puts you in the strongest position.
3. Never pay anyone to apply, and be careful who you deal with
It costs nothing to apply for UK DIGIS. No fee is ever due to apply, and the grant never has to be paid back. If someone asks for money to submit your application, hold a place for you or promise you a grant, treat that as a warning sign and step away.
Two points make this clearer:
- Help with your application is a different matter. Some people or businesses sell services around grants, such as writing your application statement. That is a separate service and not a fee for applying. Whether to use one is up to you, and PASDO doesn’t require it, so only pay if you want the help and you know what you are buying.
- The grant pays only part of the price of the service. You cover the balance with the approved service provider. This is not an application fee, and it is how the programme is meant to work.
